POEMS ON THE BODY

I'd seen posters up around Berlin for an exhibition by DENISE JULIA REYTAN. The poster featured a single colourful object and, although I wasn't sure exactly what it was, I knew I had to go. I guess I'm a sucker for bright colours.

One step into the gallery and I was confronted by an unusual instillation made from what appeared to be a mismatch of objects. It looked like a watercan and some pink hula hoops at the top of a cascading stream of shoelaces, sponges, pearl chains, pompoms, hair curlers.

On second glance, all the objects seemed to represent gatherings from a female domestic world taken from different periods of time. The way the objects were arranged together in harmony seemed to suggest that she was playing with the ideals of modern female identity, which I found very beautiful and had a surprising touch of humor. It also looked a little like Barbie on acid.

Meanwhile on the wall opposite hung a row of necklaces with a similar aesthetic. Made from a combination of pearls, silver, plastic beads, scrubbing brushes and toys, the necklaces drew on a juxtaposition of luxury and everyday items. You'd expect the meaning and values of the materials to clash but somehow she makes it work.

It was a delight to see the artistic vision of Reytan's instillation work translated into wearable a form that was individual and told a story.

For more on Denise Julia Reytan you can find alot more on her website.

Here you can also find some pieces of hers for sale including the 'its time to forget about the time' watch, also sold at collette in paris.

KUNSTHOCHSCHULE

Last weekend I visited an open day for the Berlin school of fashion and art, called  KUNSTHOCHSCHULE, Berlin Weissensee.

The school runs a broad range of creative courses ranging from architecture, film, product design, graphic design, illustration, and fashion and textiles all under a big red-tiled roof. After seeing this schools fashion parade previously in Berlin, it was a sheer delight to flip through the pages of the students portfolios and sketchbooks, spilling with inspiration, drawings and concept development for their final year collections.

I thought I'd post up some various images of their work on display as it was rather impressive. You may recognize one of the fashion sketches, being an outfit I snapped on the catwalk recently (the blue and coral red scheme).

What was one of my favorite works on display was by textile designer Nadine Hensel, who has worked on many fashion projects already and is definitely someone very talented to look out for!.

ECO FASHION

Last week I saw an exhibition called 'Eco Fashion'.
The exhibition featured many new designers turning not so expected materials into everyday fashion. While this is not something new, I was quite impressed with how interesting and fashionable the work was. Bags and clutches knitted from colourful plastic bags, hemp jersey that was super soft and denim made into writing paper!

WEDDING DRESS

Wrapping up Berlin Fashion Week was 'WEDDING DRESS'.
This was no bridal show, but a two-day event jam-packed with buzzing new and emerging designers showcasing their latest collections in an open stall setting.

It was great to be surrounded by beautiful clothing and chatting to the new fashion graduates, while outdoors was an ongoing fashion parade with onlookers looking super-stylish.

SADAK SASA KOVACEVIC

A Sample from Sadak Sasa Kovacevic's latest collection from Weißensee kunsthochschule Berlin.
You can find more of his amazing work here:

Looking at the students work on exhibition outside the parade was just as impressive - here are some of my favorite picks from SADAK SASA KOVACEVIC, who I love for their abstract designs and specialty textiles.

These Mustard-yellow pieces were best seen up close for their individual detailing. Such clever work of the 2D 'jacket' design that knitted into the fabric on the left, and the hand-stitched bubbly shirring lining the jacket in the centre, and the intricate stitching of the pocket welts and french seams playing important character to the sheer jacket on the right. Beautiful work!!!

SEE FASHION 10 - FASHION STUDENTS SHOWCASE

Two things that German designers do well are experimental cuts and tailoring. They are never scared to break the traditional rules of flattering the human form. It was refreshing to see some young blood do justice to that reputation at the fashion parade held for the students at Weißeensee school of art.

BREAD & BUTTER POP UP SHOWROOM

Meet Ariam - Odili, the friendly and self-taught designer behind this pop up showroom as part of Bread & Butter. Choosing an art gallery to show his latest range fit quite well - with each piece being so individual and like wearable art. browsing through the racks I saw screen prints taken from old photographs of his family, patchwork details, intricate hand stitching, as well as lucky charms attached to cheer you up on rainy days. visit www.ariam-odili.com
